Telegram Ads: what it is and how it works

Telegram Ads is Telegram's own advertising system: you pay the platform, and your ad is shown inside other people's public channels and bots. This page explains where the ad actually appears, who sees it, who gets paid for a view, and why you usually cannot find your own ad in your own Telegram. With quotes from official pages as of 28 October 2026 and measurements across 354,286 ads in our archive.

What Telegram Ads is

Telegram Ads is the messenger's own ad platform. An advertiser writes a short ad, sets a price per thousand views, and Telegram shows it inside other people's public channels and bots. The official name of the format is a sponsored message, and that is exactly how the ad is labelled in the interface. The text is capped at 160 characters including spaces, a limit stated in the platform rules.

A public channel qualifies as a placement from 1,000 subscribers. The threshold appears in three official places at once: the ad platform help page, the Privacy Policy and the Telegram blog. We found no official threshold for bots on any open page, so we quote no number here.

Telegram describes its own scale. The ad platform front page said on 28 October 2026: «Every month, 1 billion Telegram users generate 1 trillion views in public broadcast channels.» Those are their own figures.

A finished ad in the feed looks almost like a regular post, and only the sponsored label sets it apart. Industry blogger Alexey Tkachuk put it this way back in 2021: «It looks exactly like a regular Telegram post» (translated from Russian).

Where the ad is actually shown

There are five placements. The full list comes from two documents: the technical documentation for client developers and the Privacy Policy. The Policy names them in a single line: «Telegram offers a tool for advertisers to promote their messages in public one-to-many channels (with 1,000 subscribers or more), as well as in bots, stories, and Telegram's public search.»

PlacementHow it looksWhat the ad contains
Public channel with 1,000+ subscribersbelow every post in the channel, visible after scrolling past the last messagetitle, text up to 160 characters, sometimes an image, a button at the bottom
Chat with a bota bar above the chat, akin to an action bar, with a blue «Ad» prefix in the titletitle and text
Fullscreen channel video playera small box over the video while it playstext only, with its own display timers
Telegram public searcha row among people and channel search results, before the organic onesa channel or bot as a search result
Storieslisted in the official placement listno official description of the mechanics

On channels the documentation is literal: «In channels, they must be displayed below all other posts in the channel, after the user scrolls further down, past the last message.» This is a requirement for Telegram client apps, and half the confusion about channel ads grows out of it.

On bots, from the same page: «In bots, they must be displayed above the chat, akin to an action bar.» The title of such an ad must be locally prefixed with a blue «Ad» label.

Where Telegram Ads never appear is stated in the blog: «They are shown only in large public channels. They never appear in your chats, chat list or other interfaces.»

There is a discrepancy between the documents. The ad platform Terms of Service describe the publication space more broadly than the blog, as «Telegram channels, Telegram groups and Telegram games». The product pages say nothing about groups and games. The Terms reserve a right, while the working product is the one described in the blog and the help page.

Why you cannot see your own ad

This is the most common beginner question: the ad is active in the dashboard, money is being spent, and yet it is nowhere to be found in your own Telegram. There are three reasons, and all three are by design: Premium hides ads by default, a sponsored message sits past the last post of a channel, and you usually fall outside your own targeting.

First. A Telegram Premium subscription hides ads in channels by default. The Privacy Policy states it in one line: «Telegram Premium users don't see ads and are not affected by the Telegram Ad Platform.» There is a toggle for this case, and it was built for advertisers. The blog says: «By default, subscribing to Telegram Premium hides ads in channels», and then about the cure: «there is a new toggle to show sponsored messages in Settings > Telegram Business.» You turn it on once.

Second. An ad does not sit in a channel the way a post does. It is fetched at the moment someone opens the channel, and you look for it past the last message: scroll the feed to the end, keep scrolling, and the sponsored message appears.

Third, and this is the least obvious reason. Ads are targeted, meaning they follow the advertiser's settings, and you usually do not match your own audience: a different country and language, different subscriptions. Our archive shows how narrowly an ordinary ad spreads. Out of 349,162 ads we observed over 90 days, 161,294 were seen on exactly one placement, that is 46.2%. The median is two placements per ad, and only the top 10% reach fourteen or more. The record holder spread across 42,205 channels, but it stands alone.

So opening five familiar channels will show you neither your own ads nor your competitors'. If you need to confirm the mechanism works at all, the documentation names a service channel, t.me/SecretAdTestChannel, which by its description always returns a sponsored message.

Other people's ads, for the same reason, can only be collected by observation, and that is what our catalogue does: creatives, placements, dates and frequency. Entry is open without registration.

Who gets the money for a view

Telegram takes the money and hands half of it to the owner of the placement. The ad platform front page states it directly: «50% of the revenue from Telegram Ads goes to the owners of channels where they are displayed.» The technical documentation adds bots to channels: their owners also receive half of the revenue from ads shown in the chat with their bot.

A channel owner does not approve the specific ad and does not know in advance who will show up. They enable monetisation and watch the statistics: the blog describes the path as Channel Settings > Statistics > Monetization, and withdrawals go through Fragment, Telegram's service for username and number auctions, with no fees. We found no withdrawal threshold on any open official page, so we name no number.

For a channel owner this creates a double role worth keeping in mind. Through the dashboard they buy views for their own channel, and as a placement they earn half the revenue from other people's ads at home. These are two independent processes with separate money. People confuse them constantly.

A separate word on data. Telegram insists that ads do not rely on a user's personal data: «Telegram ads are not based on user data. They depend only on the channel in which you see them.» The ad platform page puts the same idea more bluntly: the contents of private chats and contact lists are not used for targeting.

What targeting is officially documented

The targeting options are documented, just not where people look for them. The Telegram Ads help page only covers showing ads in specific channels, while geography, language and topic are described in the Privacy Policy, section 5.6.1. That is worth knowing: an argument about targeting is settled with a link to a document.

  1. Specific channels. Placements are listed as links in the form t.me/durov, and the ad runs only there.
  2. Language of the channel and the ad. The rules separately require the language of the targeted channel to match the language of the ad and of the destination, meaning the channel, bot or website the ad leads to.
  3. Country and city. Verbatim: «ads can be shown in a particular country and city, approximated based on the country and area code of a user's phone number or their IP address.» The data is never passed to advertisers, and no precise location tracking is involved.
  4. Topic by subscriptions. Someone following a sufficient number of large public channels on one topic may see ads from that category in other channels too. The document names examples: Finance, Business & Entrepreneurship, Humor & Memes.
  5. Search keywords. Needed for ads in public search, and the rules forbid keywords that exploit harmful, prohibited or sensitive topics to attract clicks.

Device targeting is absent from the official texts even though the dashboard offers it, and reseller dashboards each carry their own set of parameters. A full breakdown of what is available in each dashboard, and what entry costs, sits next door: who holds the dashboard and what entry costs. One limit is worth memorising right away: once an ad is created its targeting is fixed, «once your ad is created, its targeting parameters can't be changed».

What a view costs

The price is counted per thousand views, CPM, and the advertiser sets it. An auction does the rest: the view goes to whoever's bid wins the place. The minimum the platform names publicly is 0.1 in its own coin, and the Terms expressly reserve Telegram's right to change both the list of publication spaces and that minimum CPM. Any bid quoted in a year-old article proves nothing today.

You can inspect the platform without money. The help page puts it this way: «You can also publish ads without a budget to get a feel for the platform.»

A launched ad and actual views are different things. Anastasia Abramova, writing on vc.ru, describes the typical case: «You passed moderation, managed to add funds to the ad, but no views appeared» (translated from Russian). With a narrow audience or in an expensive vertical the minimum bid delivers no views at all.

Why copying an approved creative does not work

The review looks at the pair «the ad and where it leads»: first the text, then the destination itself. You can copy someone else's creative, but the destination is yours, and that is what will be inspected. The requirements for it are spelled out in detail, from the avatar and description to working bot commands and a recent post in the channel, and they are collected in the walkthrough of launching and moderation.

The author of a moderation guide on Habr describes the review from a practitioner's side like this: «The moderator will follow your link» (translated from Russian). By their account, ads get declined because of an empty channel, a silent bot or a hastily built site, even when the creative itself is flawless. The same guide notes that any change to the destination can trigger a fresh review of every active ad pointing at it. Editing the destination costs you a review.

Telegram promises no review deadlines, and the Terms say so directly: «The Company shall not be bound by any time frames in conducting a review.» And one caveat in the ad rules explains the rejections that appear on no list: «All examples given are non-exhaustive.» The list is open.

One more thing to understand about any archive of other people's ads, including ours. It holds only what passed review. A declined ad is shown to nobody, so it never enters the archive and cannot. You cannot calculate approval rates from such an archive: you are looking at the survivors, and nobody outside sees what happened to the rest.

How this differs from buying a post from an admin

A post is a deal with the channel owner: you agree on a price, approve the text, they publish it, and the record stays in the feed and keeps working. With Telegram Ads nobody asks the owner, and there is nothing to agree with them about. The view is won at auction, happens once and leaves no trace in the channel history. That is why the dashboard can place you inside a competitor's channel.

A point-by-point comparison, together with entry costs and reseller fees, is already in the walkthrough of launching Telegram Ads.

What outsiders can see and what nobody can

Telegram has no official public ad library, and that is not a quibble: there is nowhere to look for an equivalent of the Meta Ad Library, and the addresses /ad-library, /library and /transparency do not exist. Why it turned out that way, and what people use instead, is covered separately: does Telegram have an ad library. The one built-in piece of transparency lives inside the ad itself: its context menu may carry a sponsor info item and a report button.

Telegram does not release the right-hand column, and it is closed to everyone equally. The left-hand column is collected by observation: the ad is shown publicly, so it can be recorded. How the services doing this are built, and where their data comes from: what people use to watch competitors' ads on Telegram. A side-by-side look at the tools is in the comparison of Telegram Ads spy tools.

How much advertising runs on Telegram, by our measurements

Telegram publishes no figures on advertising volume: neither how many ads are running nor how many advertisers are in the system. The order of magnitude is only visible through outside observation, and our measurements follow. The archive has been running since 6 July 2026, which by 28 October makes 114 days of daily recording.

Our catalogue holds 161,853 channels and bots, but only 64,792 of them were ever advertised; the rest are placements where we caught other people's ads. The gap is two and a half times, and the two numbers must not be confused.

Ad languages in our archive came out as follows: English 35.7%, Russian 25.7%, Persian 7.6%, Arabic 6.0%, Hindi 5.6%. The shares describe what was shown to us.

Where to start

  1. Check the destination. Avatar, description, live posts. A channel needs a post from the last two weeks, a bot needs working replies to commands. That is the first thing a reviewer opens.
  2. Look at what already runs in your vertical. Other people's ads show both the format and the wording used in that niche.
  3. Build the ad to fit the format. 160 characters in a single line, no line breaks or lists, one link in the text and the same link on the button.
  4. Get a dashboard. There are several routes, they cost differently, and each carries its own fees: access, account and budget.
  5. If you own a channel, count the other side too. From 1,000 subscribers a channel can earn half the revenue from other people's ads at home, and for an owner that money works against the ad budget.
  6. Switch ads back on for yourself. With Premium, the toggle in Telegram Business settings brings sponsored messages back, and you will see your own ads with your own eyes.

How we measured this

Data from our own Telegram Ads archive as of 28 October 2026. The archive has been running since 6 July 2026, giving 114 days of observation. The archive size is stated as a count of ad records; shares and placement medians are calculated over a 90-day window, as noted next to the numbers.

All quotes from official Telegram pages were opened and verified on 28 October 2026, including the Privacy Policy in the edition the site served on that date. Prices, thresholds and the minimum bid change on the platform, and the Terms expressly allow it, so every number here is tied to the date of the check.

A caveat about our shares, languages included. Advertising on Telegram is targeted, and observation sees its own slice by country and language. If something is missing from the archive it means «we have not seen it», not «it does not exist». That is a limitation of the method.

This is not legal advice and not a guide to getting around platform rules. Rules, bids and platform terms change often: check the live Telegram pages before launching.

See how advertising works in your vertical

The database holds 145833 channels and 13680 bots caught in Telegram Ads, 354183 creatives and 8884906 recorded impressions. 210468 new sightings were added in the last 24 hours.

Other people's ads are visible in full: the text, the advertiser signature, the destination link and the channels where the ad was caught. The catalogue is open without registration.
